Dennis Rader's fantasies of tying up girls and torturing them started when he was a child. He would fantasize about binding them up, torturing them, and then killing them, giving him the name BTK. He began to bind animals and torturing them when he was in his adolescent years. People who knew him claimed that he was a quiet boy and liked to keep to himself. When he graduated from school he went into the Air force and was sent to San Antonio. While he was in the Air force he was described to be somebody who blended in and was not out of the ordinary. When Rader got out of the Air force and returned to Wichita, he quickly remarried. He went from job to job and then when he was let go from his job at Cessna he slipped deeper into his fantasies. He thought "what would it feel like to strangle someone to death?".
While in between jobs Dennis Rader enjoyed "trolling" as he called it. He would walk or drive around neighborhoods or campus' where he knew women would be and he would observe them. He would find a woman that piqued his interest so much that he would enter into his fantasy of binding them, torturing them, and killing them. He would imagine what he would do to them. He would set out on potential "projects" and then he would devise a plan to kill them. His first victims were only supposed to be Julie Otero and Josephine Otero, he did not intend on killing Joseph and Joseph II. Rader would observe his victims for a while, get accustomed to their daily routines. He learned when they would leave and come home and on what days they would be home alone. He watched them and made note of everything they did. Then eventually he would follow through with his plan.
Dennis Rader was known in his community for being a loving husband and father to his two children. He was very active in his Lutheran church and he even was the President of the church when he was arrested. He also was very active in the boy scouts. Often going on camps with them and meetings. He would leave those camping trips though, to kill. Along with his killings, Rader would take pictures of himself dressed up in women's undergarments, bonded together or tied down. He also took pictures of himself in a grave, that he had dug for a victim, with a bag over his head and with his hands tied together.
Rader would keep little memorabilia from each of his victims. The police suspect that BTK craved the media attention and that he wanted to be on the news. He liked being talked about and he even told the police to publish some of the things Rader told to police in the newspaper. When he thought he was being forgotten about he would kill again or send in a little reminder to the police that he was still out there.
